Bringing the Gospel to Those Who Oppose:

August 1st 2010 Peter’s Sermons in Acts Part 2 – Acts 4:8-12, 5:29-32, 10:34-48.

This series is about evangelism – sharing the love of God and how to be right with His for eternity. God has left this crucial aspect of the kingdom in our hands. Not that he leaves us alone within the process but that he uses our time and conversations to connect people to God and others. It is a big task and one that we too often feel that we are unqualified for. Who would say that they have concerns about sharing the good news with others? Who would say that they have not brought up a conversation in fear of saying the wrong thing and pushing people away, or not knowing what really to say at all?

Last week we started the series by looking at Acts 2:14-39, 3:12-16 to see how the Holy Spirit communicated the gospel through Peter to groups who wanted to hear how to be right with God for eternity. When people want to hear the gospel we should be able to share it with them. This is a part of responsibility. If you know how you were saved, then you know how to show others. Lead them through the words of Amazing Grace if that is what you know.

When communicating the Gospel to those who are interested it is helpful to remember that it was foretold, it has evidence, there is bad and good news, then we give them the specifics of repentance and baptism and call them to action. Once they turn from their old life and make the connection to God by receiving the forgiveness of sins found in accepting God’s grace, we also become united to each other in the purposes of fellowship, ministry, evangelism, discipleship, and worship.

It is nice to have people asking questions and to connect to people who have been searching for God. It is good to show them what they have been missing and help them make a connection to Christ and His people. But not everyone wants to hear about Jesus. Not everyone likes the "good news" and they definitely do not want to hear the bad news. In fact, they oppose the message and the messenger.

Have you had, and do you have, people like that in your life?

What do you usually do with them?

    1. Avoid the topic since you know how things will go.
    2. Weed them out of your life through avoidance.
    3. Argue with them so that they know that they are wrong.
    4. Love them and hope they come around.
    5. Defend the good news and honor their choice.

Did people oppose Peter and Jesus? How did the Holy Spirit have Peter speak to those who opposed him and the message that he was carrying? Let’s look at three accounts in Acts to find out how to deal with those who oppose.

The verses and their contexts:

Acts 4:8-12 page 1696 – In 4:1-7 Peter and John have just healed a cripple at the Beautiful Gate and gave the glory to Jesus, in whose name the man was healed. The priests, captain of the temple guard, and the Sadducees become "greatly disturbed" (vs 2) and have them arrested (vs 3). The next day they bring them out for questioning that is intended to get them arrested for good or killed.

Acts 5:29-32 page 1699 – Here the work of the Spirit is growing among the believers and the high priest and all of his associates who were members of the Sadducees (vs 17) were jealous so they arrested the apostles but an angel of the Lord let them out (19) and told them to keep teaching about the new life; so they did. They are then brought in for questioning about why they have filled Jerusalem with their teaching which is determined to make them guilty of this man’s blood (vs 28). They did not like the bad news that Jesus was the Messiah and they killed him.

Acts 10:34-48 page 1710 – In this one the people who oppose the validity of the message are the givers of the message. That is, they did not think that the people that they were speaking with had a chance of being right with God; they were not Jews so how could and why would, God save them? Have you had people in your life in which you withheld the gospel because of what you thought about them? This passage takes supernatural intervention in the form of a vision (vs 9-23) even before the gospel message is presented by Peter to Cornelius and his family.

So, how do they do it? How does the Spirit convey the good news to those who oppose the message or the messenger? And do you think that the Spirit would help you when you have opportunity to share in the same way?

Reading the Texts: Acts 4:8-12 page 1696

Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: "Rulers and elders of the people! 9 If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a cripple and are asked how he was healed, 10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. 11 He is

" `the stone you builders rejected, which has become the capstone. '

AC 4:12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."

Peter is filled with the Holy Spirit and he begins with – standing up for the gospel message. He does not avoid or shy away, he points out that this is about not accepting your part in the bad news, or accepting the good news. He shows that they ignore the evidence and that the truth is verse 12 "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved". There is no other way to be right with God than through Jesus whether they like that truth or not.

Verse 13 shows the impact of their reply: "When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus." May the same be said of us.

Do you see a similar approach of not shying away, but calling people to consider the evidence in the next passage of Acts 5:29-32 page 1699? This reply is to the High Priest and Sadducees who have commanded them not to speak of Jesus.

Peter and the other apostles replied: "We must obey God rather than men! 30 The God of our fathers raised Jesus from the dead (good news) --whom you had killed by hanging him on a tree (bad news and their part in it). 31 God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he might give repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel. 32 (the evidence) We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him."

This reply makes them furious and the want to put them to death but one wise man named Gamaliel has them consider the origin of the message. In verses 38-39 he says "Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. 39 But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God."

Does the pattern of not shying away but calling people to consider the evidence hold true in Acts 10:34-48 page 1710? Here, remember, the ones that are opposing the validity of the message are the ones giving it!!

Then Peter began to speak: (because of the work of the Spirit Peter sees things differently) "I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism 35 but accepts men from every nation who fear him and do what is right. 36 (He considers the evidence that God accepts everyone – the message he preached in Acts 2!!) You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, telling the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. 37 You know what has happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached-- 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.

AC 10:39 "We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a tree, 40 but God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen. 41 He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen--by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42 He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead. 43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." (He had misunderstood that part!)

AC 10:44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. 45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. 46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God.

Then Peter said, 47 "Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have." (As a sign of His approval, not of salvation) 48 So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days.

When confronted with a teaching different than he was used to he did not shy away but considered the validity of the evidence and changed accordingly. We should have the same open mindedness to do the same when people want us to consider a different perspective.

Taking it Home:

bulletAsk if people are interested in having more confidence with their Bible to help find those who are looking.
bulletDo not shy away from sharing the good news, even with those who oppose it. They need a chance to respond to it as well. Give them the full gospel and honor their choice to accept it or deny it.
bulletPresent the evidence. Become better able to share scriptures, experiences, and scientific evidence that show why you believe what you do.

We are in this together, so if you need some help, let me know.

Next Week: The benefit of sharing history – Acts 7 page 1701.
